Throughout
my early
years I was baffled why
different people behaved differently when faced with similar stressful
circumstances. Consequently, I decided to try and find out why this is
the
case. During my observations, and the studying of people, there did
seem to be
some correlation between a person’s personality types and
their behaviour under
stressful conditions.
This
article attempts to briefly outline the different
personality types and the predicted behaviour each is likely to show
under
stressful situations.
Before
we go any further I want you to choose, from
the statements
below, which ones more reliably describe you. There is no right
or wrong answer so simply identify which statement you relate too most.
So it
is either A) or B) from the two statements below.
Statement one, are you:
A)
An outgoing person
that is fast paced,
always on the move, likes to go to parties, likes being the centre of
attention
and is optimistic and energetic with many friends?
Or
B)
A reserved person that operates at a slower
pace tending to be a little more cautious, and possibly realistic, with
lots of
patience, the stamina to get a job done, wanting to know what is
underneath the
surface and has a few close friends?
Statement two, are you:
A)
A person that enjoys getting things done,
takes great pleasure in doing a job well, likes getting stuck into the
detail
and efficiently carrying out all tasks?
Or
B)
A person that likes to interact with other people,
are concerned with the way people feel, like to be in groups where
there is a
lot of empathy, openness and talking where you desire to be liked by
other
people?
Ok.
I assume that you have chosen. Make a note
of the two statements that you agree with mostly. So you will have
noted one of
the following AA, AB, BA or BB. Now check out the paragraphs that
pertain to
you below. Also, become aware of the other three personality types with
their
strengths and weaknesses. You will be dealing with them on a day to day
basis.
Spotting the personality types of the people you associate with can
help you
understand them better and be able to relate to them more meaningfully,
which
in turn can lower your stress level.
The AA type strengths and
weaknesses
As
an AA type you are generally an outgoing
person and at the same time task orientated. These people tend to be
the Boss
as they are more interested in getting the job done rather than the
feelings of
others. The old term used for these people is that they are Choleric.
They are
the dominant types who let you know what they think. They are very good
at
decision making and getting projects started.
However,
particularly under stress, you easily
get angered, have a short fuse, a hot temper, you can be cruel,
sarcastic and
inconsiderate. These are the traits to look out for and learn to
control.
Failure to do so will bring more stress upon yourself as you begin to
make
enemies of the other personality types.
The AB type strengths and
weaknesses
As
an AB type you are generally an outgoing
person and get along with people. These people are inspirational,
influential,
inducing, impressive, interesting and impressionable. Many sales people
fall
into this category as they are able to make everything sound great and
love to
talk. Calmness is not a part of their makeup and they feel good when
things are
happening. The old term used for these people is that they are Sanguine.
However,
particularly under stress, you can be
illogical, do things that you really should not do, are undisciplined,
impulsive, too carefree, restless, loose direction, talk too much and
too
inconsistent. These are the traits to look out for and learn to
control.
Failure to do so will make your life more confused and hectic and lead
to more
stress.
The
BA type strengths and
weaknesses
As
a BA type you are generally a reserved
person that is interested in getting the task done.
These
people are competent, cautious,
careful, calculating, critical thinkers, compliant, conscientious,
correct and
conformist and like to have control. Many accountants and similar type
occupations are this type as they need to pay great attention to the
detail. The
old term used for these people is that they are Melancholic.
However,
particularly under stress, you can be
self centred, moody, react too much to the environment rather than
respond,
react negatively too quickly, critical, focus on the things that are
wrong rather
than what is right, too rigid, fear being wrong, vengeful and can be
unsociable. These are the traits to look out for and learn to control.
Failure
to do so will make others want to avoid you in times when you need
their help.
This will only lead to increased stress levels.
The BB type strengths and
weaknesses
As
a BB type you are generally a reserved
person that is interested in getting along with other people. These
people are
steady, stable, reliable, desire security, supportive, submissive, shy
and
sentimental. These people like to be in roles where they can be
supportive,
often doctors and nurses. In general people like being around these
types as
they are not pushy or bossy. The old term used for these people is that
they
are Phlegmatic.
However,
particularly under stress, you can be fearful,
indecisive, freeze up, fade into the background, be shy, fear
humiliation,
can’t say no, lack motivation, frustrated and can be selfish.
These are the
traits to look out for and learn to control. Failure to do so will make
you
look as if you are lazy and not wanting to do anything adding to any
stress
levels you may be experiencing.
This
article has just been a short introduction
to personality types and the different traits they will portray under
stressful
conditions.
You must remember that
we
are all a unique blend of all of the personality types. The more that
you sway
towards a personality type will determine the strength of the negative
effects
when you are under pressure.
I for
instance, have a great deal of the BB personality type, the Phlegmatic
personality. However, I have notice over the years that when I am
hungry my
personality type shifts to the AA type, the Choleric type, which means
I become
highly focused on obtaining food and do not care what anyone else wants
to do.
This is the complete reverse to my general personality type. I do not
know many
people who actually have this switch and I am very careful to ensure
that I
never become very hungry. If I do, I try to combat the negative traits
us by
controlling my thought patterns.
This
now brings me to a very important point.
Stressful situations can show up the weaknesses in all of us. However,
it is
possible to catch the times when you are starting to display your
negative
traits. When you realise that you are behaving inappropriately it is
possible
to take charge of your thoughts and eliminate the negative thought
patterns. This
will allow your strengths to shine through with the result of reducing
your
stress levels.
