How to Develop a Strong and Resilient Mind to Cope with Stress Quickly

Keeping cool in the heat of the moment is one of the most important skills to develop. The most successful people in all walks of life develop resilience to stressful events. People who develop mental resilience tend to enjoy good mental health as their mind has become equipped to dealing with the stress that everyone encounters in life. The ‘strong silent type’ is often perceived as someone who has developed mental resilience by appearing to be unemotional and detached. However, there is much more to it than that. The resilient person is able to master their own mind to the point that they are able to conquer their impulses. Consequently, they have the ability to stay calm in all situations and are able to avoid anger and fear in various stressful situations. It is possible to learn how to stay calm resulting in you being able to cope with stressful situations.

There are many techniques available for controlling your physical reaction to an event. Participating in sporting activities pumps more oxygen to the brain and creates endorphins that can act as a natural pick me up. Other useful things to do are Yoga and Tai Chi which are very good for developing mastery over the physical condition. In fact there are many different techniques that you can use to control your breathing and heart rate. A good search of the internet will unveil many different options for you to use.

Resilient people problem solve rather than dwell on problems and do not see themselves as victims of circumstances. Those that do not do this develop impulsive behaviours, become anxious and suffer from stress due to their inability to cope with the difficulties of life. Therefore it is important to move onto problem solving as soon as you can. Finding a support group where you are able to talk to people and begin to formulate practical steps towards solutions. It is not an opportunity to talk to people about your troubles even though sympathy at the time may feel good, sympathy provides no help whatsoever. You need to find people that provide you with empathy and help you with your problem solving.

Past bad events should not be blamed for your current problems. At any time you are able to choose your thinking pattern whatever has happened in the past. Your past does not have to condemn you to a life of problems. Many people who have been through bad experiences naturally cope with past bad experiences and keep their self esteem intact. If you are a person that has not been able to cope well with your past, then talking to a therapist may help.

Another thing to bear in mind is that coping with bad experiences and failures can be regarded as a victory. I always bear in mind that it is not important what hand we have been dealt with, it is how we play the hand that counts. From the challenges of playing your hand you are learning and can find your strengths and skills that you are good at that can be used in the future.

There is a difference between feeling low and clinical depression. Everybody feels down or low at some time as a response to challenging situations. When the very low feelings are persistent then this could be clinical depression and results in you not doing things that you would normally do and your daily life is affected. This includes work as well as friends and family being affected.  During this state of mind you feel worthless and are constantly tired. If you have had this condition before then you must seek help straight the way.

So, for the average person, developing a resilient mind is within your power. You have to take the steps necessary and continually work on your own mind. Whether it is on your own or you need to seek the help of others to solve the challenges you face.
